Tysons Corner, VA was known originally as Peach Grove, the area received the designation Tysons Crossroads after the Civil War. As recently as the 1950s, Tysons Corner was a quiet rural intersection flanked by a few small stores. Big changes came in 1963 when the Tysons area moved from a country crossroads to a giant commercial urban area.

Tysons Corner is home to two super-regional shopping malls–Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria–and the corporate headquarters of numerous companies, Tysons is Fairfax County’s central business district and a regional commercial center. Tysons Corner Center and the Tysons Galleria, the largest shopping malls in the Washington metropolitan area draw visitors from around the region. The area has been characterized as a quintessential example of an edge city.

The surrounding area is also known for some of the best public and private schools in the country. The area offers a variety of sports and recreational facilities, including major parks, recreation centers, golf courses, and nature and historical sites.

In 2008, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to begin a 40-year plan to urbanize Tysons Corner around the four stops of Washington Metro’s Silver Line, similar to Arlington’s Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. By 2050, Tysons will be transformed into a walkable, sustainable, urban center that will be home to up to 100,000 residents and 200,000 jobs. Tysons is envisioned to become a 24-hour urban center where people live, work and play; where people are engaged with their surroundings
